Gender: When you are of African Caucasian, Asian Caucasian, Latino/ Hispanic Latino, or of Pacific-Islander origin, you also have an increased risk of developing type 2 diabetes. In addition, men have an increased risk of developing type 2 diabetes than women. Your physical activity level and family medical history all play an important role in determining the risk factors for type 2 diabetes. However, if you have had a family history of diabetes, your risk factor for developing type 2 diabetes is increased. The risk factors for type 2 diabetes are different in men and women.

Family medical history. If there is a family history of diabetes in the family, you run the risk of developing type 2 diabetes or, if you already have it, of slowing down the rate at which you develop the disease. If you are of African American, Asian American, Latino/ Latino, or Pacific-Islander background, your risk factors include: obesity; lack of physical activity; poor diet; family medical history of diabetes; and family medical history of hypertension, heart disease, or strokes. Your lifestyle risk factors for type 2 diabetes include: poor diet; obesity; lack of physical activity; poor nutritional quality; family medical history of diabetes; and family medical history of hypertension, heart disease, or strokes. Smoking is a major contributor to type 2 diabetes and should be controlled.

Overweight. Overweight people have less insulin available to use when they need it. Body mass index (BMI) is one way to determine your risk factors for type 2 diabetes. The higher your BMI, the more likely you are to be insulin resistant or have high blood pressure and to develop type 2 diabetes.

Family history of diabetes. If one or more of your family members have had diabetes, chances are that you will as well. If there is a family history of diabetes in the family, your chances of developing type 2 diabetes are increased. Risk factors include: being overweight; consuming too much fat; having a family history of cardiovascular disease; and eating too much refined sugar or refined carbohydrates in your diet.

Lack of physical activity. Most people who are overweight do not participate in any type of regular physical activity. Being inactive or sedentary can have multiple negative effects, including increasing your risk of gaining weight, having poor bowel functioning and circulation, and becoming obese. Regular physical activity can reduce the risk of gaining weight and help to maintain healthy body mass index (BMI). Regular physical activity also helps to maintain a healthy weight, which is one of the risk factors for type 2 diabetes.
