Buckingham Fountain and the Architecture of Chicago

BUCKINGham Fountain is an Illinois Landmark located in the middle of Congress Parkway and Queen Street, near downtown Chicago. Dedicated in 1926, it is now one of the most famous fountains in America. It is known as the “Queen of Fountains” and is regarded as the tallest man made water fountain in the Western Hemisphere. Its unique feature is that it consists of three tiers – the water fountain sculpture itself, a reflecting pond, and a gurgling fountain. All of its components are acrylic and creates a visual wonderment around the entire attraction.

This iconic public art piece was created by renowned architect Frank Lloyd Wright, who is also responsible for the design of the Sears Tower. His career span is limited only by his imagination. Some of his major works are still standing – like the Washington Park Zoo, the Navy Pier, and the Grant Park Zoo. The Buckingham Fountain was built with an enormous brick base, designed for easy foundation and weight stability. It is also surrounded by three tiers of molded columns, giving it the appearance of a soaring and mighty fortress.

On a trip to Chicago, you should not leave without visiting this wondrous attraction, especially on a clear day. People from all over the country and even the world travel here every year to view the water show. It is one of Chicago’s most visited attractions, especially for summer. You need to make a reservation as early as possible, because they get booked up very fast! However, if you are willing to wait for a while, you can still see the beautiful sight of a Buckingham Fountain in Grant Park during the winter, when the snow doesn’t affect the sight.

If you are traveling to Chicago from the surrounding area, you may want to take a train ride to the eastern side of town. A beautiful stopover at the Grand Central Station will allow you to see the famous Buckingham Fountain as well. It is located near Oak Street in Grant Park. Once you have reached there, you will find parking lots all around. This will allow you to easily get in and out of your car. You can even use the shuttle bus service located nearby in order to reach your hotel.

If you are traveling to the northern part of the city from the downtown area, you should take a train ride to the northernmost point of the lake. It is called the North Avenue, and it runs along the lakefront. At the end of the avenue, you will find a grandstand called the Wrigley’s Lake District. Here, you will be able to admire the impressive statue of a water serpent, representing Chicago’s love for Lake Michigan. The sculptures of birds and bats along the lake front also add a natural touch to this location, along with the train station, shopping malls, restaurants, and public parks that make up the Lake Street Arts Festival.

You may also want to consider visiting the nearby neighborhoods to experience the architecture in full. One of these neighborhoods is the Norwood Park, which has been designated as a National Historic Landmark. You may also want to visit other nearby neighborhoods such as Bucktown, which was once a popular industrial area in Chicago. Visiting all of these various architectural wonders is certainly one of the best ways to appreciate Chicago’s architecture, and hopefully never forget your stay in Chicago.
